Powering MicroPoPs with the Robust Ubiquiti UISP-R

10th Apr 2025

A Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) specializing in MicroPoP deployments needed a reliable and cost-effective routing solution to power their network infrastructure at the edge. They required a device with integrated PoE capabilities to simplify installations, along with robust routing features and the capacity to handle secure, large-scale networks.

ALFA TECH’s Solution

We provided the Ubiquiti UISP-R, an eight-port Gigabit PoE router specifically designed for MicroPoP applications:

(8) GbE RJ45 Ports with 27V Passive PoE Output - Allowing for simplified powering of Ubiquiti CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) and other PoE-enabled devices, reducing the need for separate power injectors.
(1) SFP Port - Providing flexible fiber uplink options for high-bandwidth connectivity to the core network.
110W (27V) Total PoE Availability - Offering ample power for multiple connected devices.
15W/port (2-pair) / 30W/port (4-pair) PoE Output - Ensuring compatibility with a range of PoE power requirements.
Up to 1 Gbps NAT Throughput - Delivering sufficient performance for typical MicroPoP traffic demands.
Traffic Shaping Functionality and Automated Customer Suspension - Providing essential tools for bandwidth management and subscriber control.
Firewall and OSPF Routing - Offering robust security features and dynamic routing capabilities for network scalability.
Customer Satisfaction

The WISP successfully deployed the UISP-R at their MicroPoP sites, significantly streamlining their installations by eliminating the need for individual PoE injectors. The integrated PoE output and ample power budget simplified cabling and reduced deployment costs. The robust routing features, traffic shaping, and security capabilities of the UISP-R provided the necessary control and performance for their growing network, enabling them to deliver reliable internet services to their expanding customer base.
